From 994, we have made wine — at Cusona.
A thousand years of roots. The most ambitious chapter begins now.
act I — the numbers
Eight documented milestones. It begins with a parchment from 994. We are not done yet.

In the Gabelle Ordinances of the Comune of San Gimignano, Vernaccia is recorded for the first time. Already regulated, already taxed. Not a discovery: a continuity.

It is the only wine named in the Purgatorio. The detail that separates a winery from a territory.
«… and purges by fasting the eels of Bolsena and the Vernaccia.»
Purgatorio · Canto XXIV
Lorenzo the Magnificent serves Vernaccia at the Rucellai-Medici wedding banquet and sends it as a gift to Pope Innocent VIII. Not an isolated case: the trajectory of a wine that, even then, reached the highest tables.

The cellarer to Pope Paul III writes of it. Vernaccia di San Gimignano enters the history of wine criticism with a line that, five centuries on, still says enough.
«A perfect drink for Lords.»
Sante Lancerio · 1541
Vernaccia is bottled in Bordeaux-style bottles for the first time. The format becomes one of the defining marks of the denomination: the wine chooses how to present itself to the modern world.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata ever granted in Italy, before Brunello, before Barolo, before all the others. When Italy first defined by law what a great Italian wine was, it did so here.
Ministerial Decree · May 6, 1966
Vernaccia becomes the first Italian white wine awarded Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita status, the highest institutional level. Thirty years on, it remains DOCG.
Ministerial Decree · July 9, 1993
